October 2024 - Pippa Southcombe


This month we hear from Senior Womens and U18 club player, Pippa Southcombe. Pippa made her debut for the Hammerheads this year, and has been on many a national and overseas trip with the club!

How long have you been playing water polo?
My first water polo game was when I was 7 filling in for my sisters team.  (9 years) 


What made you take up the sport? 
My mum played and both my siblings played. 


What do you think is the most challenging part of the sport? 
Waking up for early morning trainings and sometimes having late night trainings 


What is the most rewarding part of the sport for you?
Most rewarding part is being with all my friends while being able to play a game that I love. 


What is your biggest Water Polo Highlight been so far? 
Winning the Hawaii invitational tournament. 
 

Do you have a Sporting ‘idol’ you look up to? Who is this and why? 
Morgan McDowall, as I have grown up watching her play and become such a strong and amazing water polo player. 


You have just come back from Australia with the New Zealand U17 team that competed in State Championships, what were your biggest takeaways and learnings from the trip? 
It was nice to meet other girls from clubs around New Zealand and get to learn new techniques from different coaches. 


What advice would you give to our younger club members who are just beginning their Water Polo journey? 
To train hard but still make it fun with all the friends you make.
